Our Story

Taqueria El Porton opened its doors in August of 2002 offering a different view on “AUTHENTIC” Mexican food in Central Illinois. Although taqueria means “taco shop”, we offer much more than just tacos and burritos. We have a wide variety of inspired, authentic, Central Mexican dishes made with quality ingredients, delicious seasonings and freshness you can taste.

Owners Adolfo & Constantina Navarrete envisioned a place that would connect their community serving the amazing flavors they were creating in their home kitchen. The vision started early at Adolfo’s childhood ranch just outside of Palmar Chico, Mexico. He learned everything he could from his father who was a butcher and cook. His dream was to serve his homemade favorites like carnitas and barbacoa in his own restaurant.

After a lifetime of entrepreneurialism in and around the food service industry, Adolfo & Constantina Navarrete dedicated their lives to making their dreams a reality. In 2001, a year before the Grand Opening of Taqueria El Porton, Adolfo & Constantina purchased the building at 901 N Main St. in Bloomington, Illinois. The building renovations were finished in August 2002 with the GRAND OPENING of Taqueria El Porton.

Our striving business is located in the heart of downtown Bloomington, Illinois; home to State Farm, Heritage Enterprises, The U.S. Cellular Coliseum and many other businesses including banks, hospitals, churches, government facilities, and local organizations. There are three major highways that cross through Bloomington/Normal. We are grateful for Central Illinois' businesses and citizens for helping to grow Taqueria El Porton into what it is today.

Thank you from everyone at Taqueria El Porton!
